Abdominoplasty corrects a protruding abdomen resulting from pregnancy, age, heredity or weight loss.
These conditions are unlikely to respond to diet or exercise as the skin and underlying muscles have been permanently stretched. The best candidates are nonsmokers in good health who are near their goal weight and want to improve loose skin, sagging muscles or stretch marks. Some patients also choose abdominoplasty to remove or improve unsightly scars. Dr. Bern can discuss with you whether a full tummy tuck or a less invasive mini-tuck is best for you.
During an abdominoplasty, loose, stretched out muscles are tightened and excess skin and fat are removed. With a full tuck, the navel is repositioned, although with a mini-tuck this is not necessary. Dr. Bern includes liposuction of the “love handles” when this will improve the aesthetic result. We ask that all patients bring a favorite bathing suit or the type of underwear they hope to wear to their preoperative appointment so that the incision site can be planned. For those wishing to improve the entire torso, tummy tucks can be combined with liposuction of the adjacent hips and thighs.
Whether related to pregnancy, heredity, weight loss, or normal aging, the abdomen is an area that often enlarges out of proportion to body size. Abdominoplasty is designed to help you obtain a smoother, more flattering abdomen.
